This unique split time novel follows two dynamic women with different but related life arcs. I have rarely cared so much to keep reading to find out what will happen next. It is a longish book, but the story never lags. Despite clocking in at 450 pages, I was actually sorry when I reached the end.

The title City of Girls works on multiple levels. It is focused on the lives of women in mid-century New York. But the title actually refers to the name of an iconic theater where the main characters lived and worked.

Elizabeth Gilbert has a unique style. As a writer, I tried to figure out how she creates such intriguing characters, but I found myself drawn back into just enjoying the story.
